Encoder Repair

Signal loss or unstable position feedback can disrupt an axis. GK-SEMI repairs supported rotary and linear encoder assemblies and helps assess matching replacements where needed.

Symptom & Repair Protocol

Encoder Repairs

We repair serviceable readhead electronics, feedback cables, connectors and optical contamination faults; damaged scales may require replacement.

A repairable readhead or connector fault may avoid replacing the complete wafer-stage scale.

01 Signal Loss or Intermittent Pulses
Customer Concern

A full scale or motor replacement can add mounting, referencing and interface work.

Our Repair Work

We repair serviceable feedback circuits and connectors, using checks suited to incremental, analog or absolute interfaces.

02 Contaminated Optical Scale
Customer Concern

Optical contamination can weaken the readhead response.

Our Repair Work

We clean accessible optics and contacts on serviceable units; damaged gratings can be matched for replacement.

03 Absolute Position Lost (Battery/Data)
Customer Concern

Battery-backed multi-turn position can be lost after backup-power failure.

Our Repair Work

We inspect serviceable battery connections and coordinate reference recovery with the installed controller.

04 Reference Mark Not Found
Customer Concern

Reference-mark faults may interrupt homing.

Our Repair Work

We repair accessible reference-signal connections and check the corresponding feedback response.

Component-Level Expertise

Signal Repair

Keep the original scale in service when the readhead or connection can be restored.

Optical & Readhead Restoration

Clean accessible optics and repair serviceable readhead contacts; sealed or damaged elements may need replacement.

Signal Phase & Waveform Verification

We check the supported incremental or absolute interface; final axis referencing remains machine-side.

  • Incremental phase checks (if applicable)
  • Signal level and stability checks
  • Interface-specific response checks

Repair Case

The wafer stage halted with a "Signal Amplitude Error". A complete scale replacement had been considered, bringing additional parts cost and installation work.

Our Diagnostic

Inspection traced the intermittent feedback to oxidized connector contacts rather than a damaged scale.

The Resolution

The affected contacts were cleaned and re-seated, and the encoder response was checked using the applicable interface. This addressed the connector fault without replacing the whole scale assembly; any machine-side reference check remained dependent on the installed control.

Technical & Commercial FAQ

Encoder FAQs

Answers for engineers and purchasing teams evaluating repair risks, lead times, and outcomes.

Can you repair rotary and linear encoders?

We assess supported rotary and linear feedback assemblies, including signal electronics, connections and optical-readhead issues depending on the construction.

Do you support both absolute and incremental encoder signals?

Yes, the repair assessment considers the actual interface. Incremental A/B/Z, analog sin/cos and absolute serial interfaces require different validation methods.

Can an optical readhead be cleaned or repaired?

Some contamination and connector problems can be corrected after inspection. Damaged scales or optical elements may require another repair route or replacement.

Will encoder repair restore machine zero automatically?

Not necessarily. Original mounting, reference positions and absolute-data handling depend on the encoder and controller design. Machine-side homing or calibration may still be required.

Can I keep the original feedback unit?

Repairing a serviceable original encoder may preserve connector, mechanical fit and feedback compatibility on a mature motion axis.

Can you source an obsolete encoder replacement?

We can investigate a matching encoder or associated motion-system part when the original unit is beyond repair.

How is signal quality checked after repair?

The appropriate output or communication response is checked against the specific encoder interface and available test setup; we do not apply one waveform standard to every encoder.

What affects repair cost and timing?

The encoder type, optical or electronic damage and availability of replacement components determine the proposed scope.

What is useful for an encoder repair inquiry?

Share the encoder identification, machine axis, alarm and any recent change in signal behavior or handling damage.
