Wafer-Level Metal Deposition

Used Electroplating Systems

We stock used electroplating systems from Applied Materials Raider, Novellus Sabre, Semitool and other platforms — multi-chamber ECD tools for copper pillars, RDL, TSV fill and bump metallization. The system that fits your line depends on four things: the target metal and feature geometry, the required uniformity spec, the wafer size and the chemical compatibility of the installed chambers. Most used-ECD purchases that go wrong fail at one of these four points — the model matches, the system arrives, and then the chamber condition or chemistry setup turns out not to support the required process. Tell us your requirements and we'll shortlist the systems that actually work on your line.

Review the electrochemical deposition platforms currently published in this category. The product page describes the model family; the actual quotation should identify the installed wafer-size hardware, chambers, chemical delivery, software and included support equipment.

Two systems with the same model name can have very different capabilities. The installed chamber count, anode configuration, wafer-size hardware and chemical delivery layout matter more than the platform name alone.
Application first

Start With the Structure You Need to Electroplate

We've seen buyers order an ECD system based on the model number alone, then discover the installed chambers can't hold the uniformity spec for their feature geometry. Copper pillars, microbumps, RDL traces, TSVs and MEMS structures impose different demands on current distribution, mass transfer, feature filling, plating thickness and post-process cleaning.

Tell us the target structure, metal stack, wafer size and production stage. We can then narrow the required chamber type, pre-wet route, wafer protection, chemistry delivery and automation level.

A platform capable of copper deposition is not automatically qualified for every copper process. Feature geometry, seed-layer resistance, bath chemistry and installed chamber design still need to match the application.
Target Structure for Electroplating
Advanced interconnect

Copper Pillars & Microbumps

Controlled height, coplanarity and metal-stack requirements for flip-chip and high-density packaging. Copper pillar diameters typically range from 10µm to 200µm.

Wafer-level routing

RDL & Contact Pads

Pattern-density and within-wafer uniformity become central when plating redistribution features. Leveler additives can produce flat topography across different pattern sizes on a single die.

Vertical connection

TSV / TGV Filling

High-aspect-ratio structures require controlled wetting, additive management and void-free fill strategy. Horizontal plating systems have enhanced uniformity for TSV applications.

Specialty devices

MEMS, RF & Sensors

Gold, nickel, copper and alloy processes may support device-specific electrical or mechanical structures.

Solder metallurgy

SnAg, Nickel & Gold Stacks

Multi-metal sequences depend on chamber separation, chemistry compatibility and wafer protection.

System architecture

Match the Platform to Development, Pilot or Volume Production

Search results and manufacturer product lines commonly separate manual or compact R&D tools from automated single-wafer and multi-chamber production platforms. The correct level depends on recipe maturity, wafer volume, metal separation, process sequencing and factory integration.

Automation spectrum From Process Development to Production

Higher automation does not replace process qualification, but it improves controlled handling, recipe execution, traceability and repeatability when production volume increases.

01Manual / Compact Tool
Suitable for chemistry development, coupon or wafer trials, low-volume research and process sampling where operator access is important. Manual tools like the Semcon 1000 are commonly used for copper, nickel and gold plating.

02Automated Single-Wafer
Adds controlled wafer handling, recipe execution, pre-wet, plating, rinse and dry steps for repeatable pilot or production processing.
Confirm Wafer size, cell design, robot, load ports, software and chemical delivery.
03Multi-Chamber Platform
Supports separated metals or connected process steps, higher capacity and flexible chamber allocation for advanced packaging or mixed-product production. Systems like the Raider ECD offer multi-zone anode arrays for ultra-thin and resistive seed layers.

Current DistributionElectrical

Anode zoning, current density and wafer electrical resistance influence center-to-edge deposition. Systems like the Raider ECD use multi-zone anode arrays to dynamically change current density.

Electrolyte FlowMass transfer

Cell geometry and flow conditions affect ion transport, feature filling and thickness consistency.

Chemistry StabilityBath control

Metal concentration, additives, temperature, filtration and contamination control shape repeatability. Additive consumption and byproduct accumulation change the bath continuously.

Seed-Layer ConditionWafer input

Continuity, resistance and surface condition can change nucleation and current distribution. Systems are available that plate on non-copper seed materials and thin seed layers below 200A.

Wafer Edge & SealProtection

Edge exclusion, sealing and backside protection must match the wafer and process sequence.

Rinse & DryPost process

Integrated cleaning controls chemical carryover, residue and wafer handling after deposition.

The real buying question

Can the Installed Cell Hold Your Process Window?

We've seen buyers select a used ECD system based on the model name, then discover the anode configuration or wafer holder cannot hold the uniformity spec their product requires. Plating quality depends on the process chamber, anode design, wafer holder, electrolyte delivery, chemical management and recipe software working as one system.

For a used semiconductor electroplating system, request configuration evidence before assuming the platform can run copper pillars, TSV fill, RDL or a multi-metal stack.

The best comparison is application-to-configuration: target structure, metal, thickness, wafer size, seed layer, output requirement and actual installed modules.

What Should Be Confirmed Before a Quote?

Applied Materials Raider Edge, Novellus Sabre and Semitool are configurable ECD platforms. A model name alone does not reveal the exact plating capability of the machine being offered.

Send your target process first. We can then compare the available system against the required wafer size, metal, chamber architecture, facilities and condition.

Buyer questions

Electroplating System FAQ

These answers cover the questions that usually affect equipment direction. The final recommendation still depends on the target structure and actual available system configuration.

What is a semiconductor electroplating system used for?

It deposits controlled metal layers on wafers or related substrates. Common applications include copper pillars, solder bumps, redistribution layers, contact pads, TSV or TGV filling, MEMS structures and specialty metal stacks.

What is the difference between a manual plating tool and an automated ECD platform?

Manual or compact tools are commonly used for R&D, chemistry development and low-volume work. Automated systems add controlled wafer handling, recipes, pre-wet, plating, rinse, dry, traceability and multi-chamber production capability.

Can one electroplating system process copper, nickel, gold and SnAg?

Potentially, but not by model name alone. Different metals may require dedicated chambers, tanks, filters, plumbing, compatible materials and contamination-control strategies. The installed configuration must be checked.

How do I choose an electroplating system for copper pillars, RDL or TSVs?

Start with feature geometry, target thickness, wafer size, seed-layer condition, metal, chemistry, uniformity target and production volume. These inputs determine the suitable cell design, flow, current control and automation route.

What should be inspected on a used wafer electroplating system?

Inspect the chambers, anodes, wafer holders, seal components, robots, chemical tanks, pumps, filtration, plumbing, software, recipes, utilities, corrosion condition, maintenance history and decontamination status.

What information is needed for an electroplating equipment quotation?

Send the target plated structure, metal or metal stack, wafer size, target thickness, process stage, desired automation, preferred model or manufacturer, required condition, quantity and destination country.
